When you have an idea you are going to be confident your idea is unique, that it is the best thing since sliced bread or at least since Johnny Wilkinson scored the winning conversion at the 2003 Rugby World Cup.
University has prepared you well for businesses, university has taught you how to research. Business is no different; you need to carry out research.

We aren't saying you need to write a 50 page dissertation as to why your idea will dramatically enhance potential users' lives, just that it might be worth spending half an hour checking out potential competition on Google.
